The Amherst A Better Chance Program

The Amherst A Better Chance Program is looking for a host family for one of its 9th grade scholars.  For one weekend each month, the families provide ABC students with a home experience outside of the ABC residence.  The Host Family program establishes a link between ABC and community members. Students are provided an alternative place to relax, socialize and study. They are also given the opportunity to forge additional, positive personal relationships. Reciprocally, host families derive the satisfaction of interacting with talented young men who have both a lot to offer and to learn from broadened social contacts.

The student/host family relationship is intended to be as informal as possible. Host families should not feel obligated to constantly shower the student with gifts, entertainment, or out-of-the-ordinary privileges. On most occasions, it is sufficient to have the students participate in normal family activities. A quiet evening at home is often a welcome change from everyday life in the ABC house. ABC students have varying needs just as host families have varying interest; therefore, the key is to work out a mutually rewarding, amiable relationship. The host family weekend offers an opportunity to share everything from a quiet evening at home, to attendance at concerts, movies, and other activities that may interest students and families.

Echo Hill residents who might be interested in learning more about the Host Family Program should contact Wendy Kohler via email at wendykohler@comcast.net or cell phone:  413-250-0091.

In the news….

Noticed any interesting signage on Heatherstone lately? Thanks to Elizabeth Lingo’s inspiration and supplies, children in the neighborhood began their own “traffic calming” initiative! A Gazette reporter and photographer interviewed and photographed many of our young artists and their parents: check the Gazette website as of 8/15/14! 8.3.14 SIGNS!

Also, say hello to our friendly APD officer stationed on the corner of Kettle Pond lately and thank him for being a presence in our neighborhood if you see him.

Pond Lab Report, July 2014

Water Quality Samples
The latest readings for bacteria and phosphates were very good. Here are the results from a sample taken and sent to Quabbin Labs June 30:
E.Coli of 10 (Colony forming units of E.Coli per 100 ml of sample water) is normal for us.  In the past three years, we have had acceptable readings as high as 15 and 20.
Phosphate of 0.03 (mg/l) is the lowest we have had in three years.  Last year the sample I took in June was .58 and the two samples taken in September were .07 and .08.

Pond Lab Report, June 2014

Per New England Environmental Inc., the clarity of water remains good. The phosphorus readings taken at the pond bottom and pond surface were 32.9 and 27.4 micrograms/liter (μg/L) respectively. Expressed as milligrams/liter (mg/L), the readings were .0329 and .0274, the result was the lowest we’ve had in 3 years. This year’s improvement is likely attributable to the generally cooler temperatures and increased rainfall. Also the pre-season work and annual clean-up was very helpful.

July sampling results forthcoming.
